Hot Stone Massage

What is Hot Stone Massage?

Hot Stone Massage is a massage technique that incorporates the use of hot, smooth, flat basalt stones. The stone are typically rich in iron to help retain heat. Each stone varies in size and shape and is placed in various locations on the body. The heat from the stones relaxes the muscles allowing the practitioner to access the deeper layers of muscle tissue.

How Is this Technique Performed?

During a Hot Stone Massage, the client will be undressed and covered by a sheet or towel while lying comfortably faced down. The practitioner will start by performing a Swedish Massage. This is done to help warm up your muscles. The practitioner will then apply oil to help the stones to move smoothly across the muscles.

Each stone is warmed and placed on the body in specific locations. As the stone cools, it is replaced by another warm stone. The practitioner will always hold the stone first to ensure the temperature is not too hot.

The locations vary depending upon the client’s condition and/or needs. Common placements are in various spots on the back, acupressure points, in the palms of the hands or even in between the toes. The stones are either left in place until they cool, or used as a massage tool.

After the stones have relaxed the muscles, your practitioner will place them aside and use their hands to administer the massage directly. Then the stones will be placed back on and left for a short amount of time.
